For TheEasyWay for Windows 0.1 and the iPhone app. Written October 18, 2026.
Most problems are one of three things: the two devices are not on the same Wi-Fi, Windows is blocking the app, or the iPhone is not allowed to reach the local network. Start there.
It will not pair
- Same Wi-Fi. The iPhone and the computer must be on the same network. A guest network, or a router with “AP isolation” switched on, keeps devices apart. A VPN on either device can do the same, so switch it off to test.
- Windows firewall. The first time it runs, Windows asks about network access. It must be allowed on Private networks. If you closed that box, right-click the TheEasyWay icon in the tray and choose Allow on my network.
- iPhone permissions. In Settings, then TheEasyWay, turn on Local Network and Camera. The camera is only used to read the code.
- The code expired. A code lasts five minutes. Press New code in the Windows window and scan the new one.
- The computer already has a phone. It pairs with one iPhone. In the pairing window choose Pair a different phone first.
Files are not arriving
The top of the app tells you what is happening:
- Connected. Everything is working. Pull down on the list to check right now.
- Waiting for your computer. The computer is off, asleep, on another network, or TheEasyWay is not running on it. Open TheEasyWay on the computer. Files you queued wait on your phone and go by themselves.
- Your computer forgot this phone. Choose Pair again and scan a new code. Nothing already delivered is lost.
iOS only lets an app run in the background for short stretches, so the first transfer after a long gap can wait until you open TheEasyWay. Files are never lost while they wait. Each file can be up to 100 MB.
Where are my files
- On the iPhone: in the Files app, under On My iPhone, then TheEasyWay.
- On the computer: in the TEW folder in your user folder. Files from your phone are inside a folder named From iPhone.
- Deleting a file on one device never deletes it on the other.
Windows says “Windows protected your PC”
The beta is not code-signed yet, so Windows does not recognize it. Compare the SHA-256 on the download section with your file (in PowerShell: Get-FileHash and the file name). If they match, choose More info, then Run anyway.
Changing phones or computers
To use a new iPhone, open the pairing window on the computer and choose Pair a different phone. To use a new computer, in the iPhone app open the plus menu and choose Disconnect this computer, then scan the new computer's code.
Removing TheEasyWay
- iPhone: delete the app. Its folder in Files goes with it.
- Windows: in the tray menu turn off Start with Windows, choose Quit TheEasyWay, then delete the program, the TEW folder, and the pairing data in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\TEW.
Still stuck
Write to steve@mediagato.com. It helps to say which Windows version and iPhone you have, what the top of the app says, and what you see in the Windows pairing window.
